From the beginning, the Newfoundland and Labrador
Heritage Web Site has aimed to serve
the province's schools, and the public. High school
students are invited to participate in the creation
of web sites that feature the rich cultural heritage,
history and environment of Newfoundland and Labrador.
It is for this reason that the Schools Project section
of the Heritage Web Site has been created.
The Schools Project was initiated in the fall of 1997,
when several provincial multimedia firms were asked to
identify three capable and willing provincial schools, and
lend their expertise in undertaking a web project about
their communities. Each school was asked to develop a site
dedicated to exploring the history and heritage of its
specific community.
Mount Pearl Junior High and the Stephenville Integrated
High School are already featuring their communities in
stories, interviews and pictures on the Schools
Project site. Soon, Southwest Arm Academy at Little Heart's
Ease will join them. All three high schools have tackled
the history and culture of their communities in different
ways. Listen to Mount Pearl students interview citizens
of vastly different backgrounds, who have made this newest
Newfoundland city their home. Explore with the students
at Stephenville their recent past, when suddenly this
quiet town became a hub of the American military
presence in Newfoundland and was changed forever.
Look forward to the contributions of students from
Little Heart's Ease, who plan to show the importance of the
schooner fishery for the establishment and
growth of their community.
These projects impart many benefits. For the students, the
Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Web Site offers both a
rich resource and a valuable opportunity to increase their
knowledge of the province's heritage. While they are busy
with building the web pages,
students will become intimately acquainted with their home towns,
while developing their own research, computer and
communication skills.
It is the intention of the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage
Web project to continue this partnership with the high
schools of the province. It will provide us with
a marvellous opportunity to showcase the talent
that is emerging in the province's schools and information
technology sector.
