Select Titles from John Thomas Mullock's Collection

The books John Thomas Mullock collected throughout his life delineate an intriguing alternative biography of his diverse and, at times, conflicting intellectual pursuits. As the following selection from the Mullock collection, organized by the headings on the bookcases in the Mullock Library, will illustrate, his books offer a window onto an inquisitive mind that often reached beyond the boundaries of his public persona. These samplings present a multifaceted narrative of a boundless intellectual life that only the books themselves can tell. They were first published in The Finest Room in the Colony: The Library of John Thomas Mullock, edited by Ágnes Juhász-Ormsby and Nancy Earle (St. John’s: Memorial University Libraries, 2016), an electronic version of which is also available on the website of the Digital Archives Initiative, Memorial University Libraries.
