Avalon Forest

This ecoregion is located in the interior of the Avalon Peninsula. Its climate is influenced by the ocean, which produces cool summers and cold winters. Fog frequency is great, particularly in the summer. The mean annual temperature is around 5.5°C, with a mean summer temperature of 11.5°C and a mean winter temperature of -1°C. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 1400 mm to 1500 mm.

Flora and Fauna

The forest is dominated by balsam fir. Forest growth rarely exceeds 12 m in height. White birch grows well on north-facing slopes. The region is composed of a mix of sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Moose, lynx, black bear, red fox, and caribou are typical wildlife species. Tourism, recreation, and forestry are the dominant land-use activities in this region.
