Master of a ship of Barnstaple (whose owner is called Strange); Wynne writes in 1621, "...hee did spare mee halfe his Stage; the which did stand me in great steede to put my provision in at the first landing of them";

Yonge, James

surgeon who, at age 16, worked for several seasons in south Avalon; his Journal of 1663 shows a house marked "Lady Kirk" somewhere close to where the Parks Canada property is today; this has always been assumed to be the Mansion House; the map is probably more accurate than Fitzhugh's of 1693 but it is not known whether the Mansion House was really this far east; a structure found at about this location in 1993 produced silver-embroidered buttonholes and a silver cuff- or waistciat link suggesting that someone of means had occupied the house when it was destroyed by the French in 1696.
