Whitfield Samuel Llewellyn Romilly was born in Newfoundland in 1859 to Whitfield Lucien Romilly and Jane Julia Cjoyne. With his first wife, Lucy Fowlow, he had five children: Harold, Edgar, Francis, Amy, and John. Lucy died in 1907, and Romilly later married Caroline M. Chambers. He was ordained as deacon in 1885 and as priest by Bishop Random of Newfoundland in 1889. He held many positions throughout his career: he first became rector of St. John the Baptist Church in Sanbornville, New Hampshire, in 1892. He also served as rector of the following: St. Matthew’s Church in Lahave, Nova Scotia; St. David’s Church in Lorain, Ohio; St. Philip’s Church in Belmont, New York; Grace Church in Cleveland; Washington Parish in Oak Grove, Virginia; and Slaughter Parish in Rapidan, Virginia. He was originally a member of the diocese of Newfoundland but eventually became a priest of the diocese of Virginia. He died in Staunton, Virginia, in 1944, and was laid to rest in Roslindale, Massachusetts. His name is written on many texts in the Queen Elizabeth II Library, as W. S. L. Romilly, W. S. Llewellyn Romilly, or a similar variant.
