Rev. W. K. Pitcher
W. K. Pitcher was a priest who served many different towns and parishes in Newfoundland and Labrador. Personal information about Pitcher is not well documented or readily accessible. Even his first name is difficult to determine. In the description for the book Surviving on the Headland: Town of Bay-de-Verde by Donald Barter, a Reverend William K. Pitcher is mentioned, while in marriage records for Labrador from 1901 to 1905, a Reverend Walter K. Pitcher served in Battle Harbour; however, it is impossible to confirm if either of these men is the same W. K. Pitcher whose books form part of the Provenance Collection. Nonetheless, W. K. Pitcher was a prominent clergyman in the province. A priest at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Hodge’s Cove from November 1905 to 1906, he also served the Battle Harbour mission in Labrador from at least 1913 to 1917 and was also chairman of the Battle Harbour Board of Education. He was later priest at the mission of Botwood from approximately 1922 to 1935. It appears that he also was part of the clergy in Curling, but as his time there overlapped with his position at Botwood, the exact years are difficult to determine. Additionally, he was a member of the clergy at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Long Beach (years of service unknown) and of the deanery of Bay St. George for the Rose Blanche district. His name appears twice on a single text in the Queen Elizabeth II Library.
