Rev. J. R. Turnock
James Robert Turnock was born in England in 1829 to Sarah Marson. As records of his father could not be found, it is possible that his mother was unmarried; however, it seems more likely that his father’s name was not well documented, as Turnock and his mother have different surnames. A student at Hertford College in Oxford, he was ordained as priest around 1852. In 1868, he married Louisa Jones, with whom he had one child, Mary Caroline Irene Turnock. During his life, he held several notable positions, including incumbent of St. Mary-le-Tower from 1861 to 1890, rector of Waltham from 1890 to 1893, and honorary canon of Norwich Cathedral. He also wrote Sermons Addressed to the Congregation of St. Mary-le-Tower. Turnock died on January 20, 1895. According to his gravestone, he “fell asleep,” either dying peacefully or literally died in his sleep. He is buried in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. Turnock’s name is inscribed on several texts at the Queen Elizabeth II Library, most of which appear to be works by Georg Heinrich August von Ewald and J. Frederick Smith. Bibliographical information recorded from these texts contain misspellings of his surname as a result of unclear script.
