Canon C. H. H. Stewart

Charles Henry Hylton was born in England in 1849 to William Stewart and Annie Eliza Stewart (née Green). Charles’s older sister, Marian, died as an infant in 1846, several years before his birth. In 1878, Charles married Florence Hope Dixon, with whom he had five children. He was a choral scholar and organist of St. Catherine’s College in Cambridge from an uncertain date until 1873. Following this, he took holy orders and became curate of Pebmarsh, Essex. He also served as organist of Chichester Cathedral from 1874 to 1875 and was the minor canon precentor of Chester Cathedral from 1877 to 1889. He was also the vicar of New Brighton from 1889 to 1904 and, following this, the rector of Bathwick from 1904 to 1916. Finally, he gained the title of honorary canon of Chester in 1916, a title he presumably held until his death in 1922. Charles’s son Arthur “Charles” Lestoc Hylton Stewart also became a renowned organist, most notably of Rochester Cathedral, Chester Cathedral, and St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
