Queen’s College Library General Catalogue
The current Queen’s College Library Catalogue found on this website consists of Bishop Feild’s personal collection of books that he had with him upon his arrival in St. John’s, including a small set of eighteenth-century historical works, the family Bible he inherited from his father, surgeon James Feild, theological and church historical works, and architectural studies. Apart from Feild’s personal collection, the Queen’s College Library Catalogue features volumes given to the library by prominent donors throughout the nineteenth century. On account of his old friendship with Feild’s successor Llewellyn Jones (1840-1918), bishop of Newfoundland, Reverend Frederick Menzies (1815-1901), English priest and former fellow and vice-principal of Brasenose College, Oxford, presented 92 volumes for the use of Queen’s College, including an extensive collection of the works of the Church Fathers and both Anglican and Catholic church histories. Additionally, the historic Queen’s College Collection comprises the donations of Dr. Bray’s Associates’, a missionary society founded by the Church of England clergyman Reverend Thomas Bray (1658-1730), which prioritized the support of libraries and education inside and outside the church. The society’s donation inscription is found in 151 extant volumes in the Queen’s College Collection, which cover historical and theological texts primarily of Anglican affiliation. Furthermore, the Queen’s College Catalogue contains a substantial number of books with notable Newfoundland provenance, donated to the library by former students of Queen’s College, business owners who resided on the island, and Anglican priests who worked throughout Newfoundland. The aforementioned collections that form the nucleus of the historic Queen’s College Collection are catalogued alphabetically by author on this site and can be located by the attached call numbers both in person and online at Memorial University Libraries Queen Elizabeth II.
