Tilt Cove mine, ca. 1900

Newfoundland and Labrador’s first major mine opened at Tilt Cove in 1864 after prospectors discovered large copper deposits and traces of gold there in 1857. Before it closed in 1917, the mine produced approximately 61,000 tons of copper, 416 tons of nickel ore, 50,000 ounces of gold, and 50,000 ounces of silver.
