Slum Houses, ca. 1952
These are some examples of the houses that existed in the central slum in 1952-53, immediately before slum clearance began. Note the terrible condition of the clapboard and windows, as well as the poor condition of the chimney in the top photo. It is unlikely these houses were weatherproof. The city actually owned the house in the bottom photo due to tax arrears, and its council members were reportedly shocked when shown this picture.
