Unidentified girls with codfish, ca. 1905

Newfoundland and Labrador's salt-cod fishery encountered difficulties in the 1880s. An overabundance of saltfish on the international market caused prices to drop and competition from French and Norwegian fishers further cut into Newfoundland and Labrador's profits.
