Wabana mine, ca. 1905

Men working at the Bell Island mine in Conception Bay. Unlike the salt-cod fishery, Newfoundland and Labrador’s mines, paper mills, and logging operations employed almost exclusively male workers during the first half of the 20th century, leaving women with few employment options outside the domestic and retail spheres.
