Bristol, England, 1787
France, Spain, and Portugal participated in Newfoundland and Labrador's early migratory fishery, but it was England's West Country that eventually dominated the industry. Each year, shiploads of fishers departed Bristol, Dartmouth, and other West Country ports to catch cod on the other side of the Atlantic.
