Corner Brook paper mill, ca. 1930
Work in company towns like Corner Brook and Buchans did not revolve around the family unit as it did in Newfoundland and Labrador’s rural fishing communities during the first half of the 20th century. Although some women did obtain work in company towns, it was usually in the lower-paying fields of domestic and retail work.
