City Dump, Empire Avenue, St. John's, 1948
This is the old city garbage dump on Empire Avenue. The city was growing around the dump at this time and it was closed and filled in shortly after. As of 2011, the area contains Metrobus headquarters, Wishingwell Park, and the St. John's offices of the Canada Revenue Agency. This shift from a peripheral city area used as a dump to a reclaimed piece of land serving important city needs is a good example of how land use in cities can change dramatically over time.
