SS Great Eastern at Heart's Content, July 1866
The SS Great Eastern finished laying the world's first submarine transatlantic telegraph cable on 27 July 1866 when it arrived at Heart's Content, Newfoundland and Labrador from Valencia, Ireland. The vessel traveled 1,686 nautical miles and laid about 120 miles of cables each day during its 13-day journey.
