The Heritage Fair Program is part of the Charles R. Bronfman
Foundation's National Heritage Project. The objectives are to encourage
greater knowledge and interest in our history and to increase pride and sense
of belonging. The project involves Canadians in sharing stories and values
with each other and the world. Since 1993, the CRB Foundation of Montréal,
Québec, has worked with the community heritage
groups and schools to sponsor annual Heritage Fairs for young Canadians. The Fairs increase
students' awareness of and interest in Canadian history.
Newfoundland and Labrador is now heavily involved in
three of the five Heritage Project components:
- Heritage Minutes (broadcast across Canada)
- Heritage Learning Resources (for classroom use)
- Heritage Fair Program (for students and heritage organizations in every province)
- E-Fair (an electronic component linking students throughout a national web
site and other computer links)
- National Heritage Data Base (a partnership project between the
CRB Foundation and Memorial University)
In the summer of 1998 the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Web Site Project placed two
students' projects on the web. These projects, Andrew Woodland's Saltbox Architecture
and Margaret Hawco's Child Labour in Bell Island Mines, were featured in the 1998
St. John's Heritage Fair.
