The Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives (ANLA) was
established in 1994, as the merger of two groups. One of these groups was the Association of
Newfoundland and Labrador Archivists which represented individuals - both
professional and volunteer - working with archival collections in the province. The second group was
the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Archives (NLCA) which represented the interests of
institutions, corporations or associations whose mandates included the preservation and
management of their archival holdings. At their 1994 annual general meetings, the membership of both
groups voted to merge to form the Association of Newfoundland and
Labrador Archives (ANLA) in order to represent both individuals and institutions.
In 1999, ANLA and the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Web Site Project became
partners under an Industry Canada Digital Collections contract to produce
a comprehensive web site on Newfoundland's involvement in World War I (The Great
War). Towards this end the Newfoundland and the Great War project used a collection
of unique glass-plate negatives, photos, video and music along with select
interpretive text. The project was completed and launched in June 2000.
