The NLS 2205 web site is a joint project of the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Web Site and the provincial Department of Education. It provides supplementary reading material for students of Newfoundland and Labrador Studies 2205, a high school social studies course that teaches the province’s history, culture, and current affairs. More than 500 articles are available on this website. Most are about 1,200 words long and provide straightforward, well-researched information about the history, geography, population, culture, and society of Newfoundland and Labrador. Many articles also include photographs and other images that give fascinating visual insight into the province’s development over time. The NLS 2205 web site is organized into three units, which correspond to the three organizational themes in the NLS 2205 curriculum guide: Unit One: Culture, Heritage, and Identity examines the various aspects of Newfoundland and Labrador culture and how it has changed over time. This unit also teaches the origins and lifestyles of all people living in Newfoundland and Labrador from prehistoric times to the mid-1700s. Unit Two: People of the Land and Sea presents information about the economy and governance of Newfoundland and Labrador from the mid-1700s to 1934. It describes how the lifestyles of |

local inhabitants changed during this period and how various events helped to shape society, including the 1894 Bank Crash, the Great Depression, and the First World War. Unit Three: A Time of Change discusses how Newfoundland and Labrador has changed since 1934. Important topics include the Commission of Government, the Second World War, and Confederation with Canada. Articles in this unit also examine how the province’s economy, society, and culture have changed during the 60 years since Confederation. Students are invited to use this web site to not only learn about the past, but to gain insight into how it has shaped our present. We also hope that teachers will visit these pages to help design lesson plans for NLS 2205 and to supplement information already provided in other educational materials. |
