Inauguration of the Commission of Government, February 16, 1934
The Commission of Government took office in February 1934, but was unable to improve the Great Depression’s impacts on Newfoundland and Labrador’s working class. Destitution remained widespread and the country’s relief system still left people hungry and malnourished. It was not until the employment boom of the Second World War that the country recovered.
