Newfoundland Ranger Norman Crane, ca. 1940s

Newfoundland Rangers had to perform a wide range of duties with little supervision. They enforced criminal and game laws, issued relief payments to the poor and unemployed, inspected logging camps, collected customs duties, helped build roads, bridges, and other structures, issued hunting licenses, and performed a variety of other tasks.
