The crossword puzzle below is comprised of words taken from the 'Exploration and Settlement'
articles of our web site. By clicking on the clue number in the Across/Down list below
the game, you can open the article from which the clue was derived. The intent
is to foster learning by allowing you to read the associated article
in the event that you experience difficulty with a particular word.
We hope you find the crossword puzzle both
enjoyable and educational.
Playing Instructions:
To select a word, click your mouse on any block which comprises that word. The blocks of the
selected word are highlighted in yellow and the current block is highlighted in blue.
Also, the clue for the selected word will appear at the top of the crossword puzzle.
You can change the orientation (Across/Down) at any time by pressing the space-bar. Letters
are entered via your keyboard and the current block will advance by one with each letter
you type, until you reach the end of the word. Incorrect letters are displayed in red, while
correct letters are shown in black. If you type an incorrect letter, you can
either use the backspace key on your keyboard or simply click in that block and re-type the letter.
Since Java applets cannot be printed, we have included a link to a
printable version in the sidebar.
Clicking on a number in the lists below will open the relevant article in another browser window.
You may then read the article and find the word to which the clue applies. After finding the word
you can close the browser window containing the article and return to the crossword puzzle.
If the second browser window containing an article is left open, clicking on any numbers in the
list below will load the appropriate document in that window. You can them switch over to the
second browser window to read the article.
