Section of Gerolamo da Verrazzano's map of the world, 1529.
This 16th-century map was produced by the brother of the Florentine explorer, Giovanni da Verrazzano. In 1524, Verrazzano sailed along the North American east coast – as far north as Newfoundland – while searching for a Western route to Asia.
