The Roosevelt, 1908

The Roosevelt, 1908
Explorer Robert Peary built the Roosevelt to serve as flagship of his 1905-06 North Pole expedition. Under command of Newfoundland and Labrador master mariner Bob Bartlett, the vessel made it safely to the Arctic in September 1905, but was badly damaged during the return trip after sea ice and heavy weather destroyed its rudder and two of its propellers.

From Robert Peary, The North Pole (London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910) 122.
