Exploration of the St. Lawrence by Cartier 1534-42.
In the 16th century, Jacques Cartier made three voyages through the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Cartier, a
Breton with expertise in navigation and cartography, made three voyages in 1534, 1535-6, and 1541-2 to
explore both the River and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The St. Lawrence is a waterway situated on Canada's
east coast which opens out into the Atlantic Ocean.
