   1895 PROWSE 495 From [1869] to this [day] Confederation has never been put forward before the country as a practical political question. 1895 Evening Herald 24 Apr Promptly at 4 o'clock yesterday the House opened, and an immense crowd had assembled. Inside the bar were gathered notables of Church and State, and every point of vantage was occupied. All were intensely interested, for the announcement of the terms for Confederation was expected, and the audience were not disappointed. 1948 The Confederate No 8, p. 1 Mr Smallwood addressed the great crowd [at Twillingate]. The ladies cheered him specially many of them exclaiming: 'God bless you!' and 'God bless Confederation!' 1948 The Independent No 14, p. 1 Mr Gushue ... says the position of our fisheries under Confederation has not been investigated and views with 'grave disquietude,' in other words with fear, the impact of Confederation on our salt fish industry particularly. 1953 JOB 12 Over the old cobble-paved street has rattled the island's provisions, and now, curiously enough, in 1949, since the advent of Confederation, old Water Street is paved. and one hears a less dominant note, which seems to indicate that Newfoundland has settled down to become part of a greater whole.
