   1 1988 GOSSE 32 All hands drove thin pieces of steel into the heels of their boots. These steel slivers, usually three in number, protruded approximately one-quarter of an inch and measured the same amount in width. These were known as 'chisels' and, like the nails or 'sparbles' extending from the soles, prevented slipping on the ice.
