catalina, n [ = settlement in Trinity Bay]. Comb catalina stone: pyrite.
[1810] 1971 ANSPACH 31 In Catalina Harbour is a high rock
intersected with veins or pieces of a shining pale-yellow metallic substance: it is
compact and brittle; like flint it emits fire when struck with the steel or a piece of
its own kind, and at the same time a strong sulphurous smell. I beg to transmit as a
specimen, the largest piece of Catalina Stone ... that I have been able to find. 1869
MURRAY & HOWLEY 199 The pyritiferous character of the slates [of Catalina] has long
been known; the cubical crystals of large size and brilliant aspect having attracted
attention, and acquired a local reputation as Catalina stone. 1937 Bk of
Nfld i, 202 The rocks along the sea-shore contain what is called 'Catalina Stone.'
This is iron pyrites.
