   [1867] 1899 Nfld Law Reports 210 [He was] maintained by the produce of the farm and the monies earned by the hire of defendant's horse and car. 1972 NEMEC 85 In the pre-Confederation era it was not unusual for upwards of 1,500 horse 'car' (cart) loads of kelp to be taken each spring from local beaches for use as fertilizer in gardens and meadows and as feed for sheep and cattle.
