fishermen and their families on the Kyle was in the steerage and very third class.
We had to pick our bunks and hold them while the fishermen poured aboard from the various
ports of call. Since no sheets or blankets were provided, we brought our own cadders. The
men slept in the holds of the ship on sacks they brought with them. C 71-130 Cadders
[are] heavy quilts or a number of lighter quilts sewn together. Each bed, especially on
the Labrador in summer, would have one cadder. 1979 POCIUS 33 A special type of quilt
called a 'catter' was constructed to be used on the boats going to Labrador. They were
smaller than a normal quilt used for a single bed, fitting the small bunks aboard ship.
Catters were thicker than normal quilts and only one or two were needed for warmth.
