bultow n 1982 DAWE 17 A sculpin who swam in Sop's
Arm,/Stirred up quite a bit of alarm,/When he dragged a bultow/All the way to
Forteau,/And never recovered his calm. 1987 FIZZARD 95 The change in the vessels was
accompanied by an addition to the fishing gear, when in about 1862 the trawl, or the
'bultow' was introduced. 1988 GOSSE 20 Also in common use were long lines of 50 fathoms
or more to which were attached hooked lines three feet in length and spaced at
approximately one-fathom intervals. Each hook was baited and the whole paid out from the
boat with buoyed graplins at either end. This fishing gear was known as bultows or hand
trawls.
