brook n A large stream of fresh water with such characteristics as a flat, rocky bottom, considerable width but often no great depth, and a rapid, noisy flow; a river.
   1792 PULLING MS 8 This old man who was a salmon catcher and lived amongst the Northern brooks many years has frequently met with and parted from the Indians without offering to hurt each other. 1842 BONNYCASTLE i, 197 Rivers [are] called brooks in Newfoundland, and lakes, ponds. 1912 CABOT 158 On this coast 'pond' and 'brook' are names for largest inland waters; 'lake' and 'river' are terms for the smaller ones. 1979 Evening Telegram 29 June, p. 4 [Salmon] rivers closed on the south coast are Simm's Brook, Southwest Brook, Taylor's Bay Brook and Old Bay Brook. In the Central Newfoundland area the rivers closed are: Northwest Arm Brook at New Bay, Notre Dame Bay, and Charles Brook in Bay of Exploits.
