1 In designations of various containers, carts, etc, for moving fertilizers to planted 'grounds': ~ bar(row) [see BARROW1], ~ box, ~ pot.
P 9-73 We had a flour barrel sawed off in the middle and a framework with handles built around it. It was called the dung tub or dung barrow. When filled to the top [with manure] it was a carrying load for two men. P 40-78 The dung-bar was a round or square container with two long poles attached half way up the sides, one on each side so that it can be carried by two men; used for transporting manure, caplin and so on. T 187-65 I bid up then, had my dinner 'long with grandfather for the sake o' gettin' into a old dumb [i.e. dung] box [or cart]. P 126-67 Dung pot: sleigh used with horse to haul caplin, manure, etc. 1979 TIZZARD 192 With this dung barrow we carried loads of stable manure up on the hill, boatloads of caplin and rockweed to the potato ground in bottom and on Big Island...
2 Comb dung bird: parasitic jaeger (Stercorarius parasiticus).
1870 Can Naturalist v, 407 ... called 'dung birds' by the settlers, evidently from the manner in which they persecute the smaller species of Laridae, and devour ... their feces.
   dung mixen: snow.
P 151-68 The old people have nicknames put on almost everything, and snow is no exception. I have heard [it called] 'dung-mixen,' 'the devil's blanket,' 'devil's feathers,' etc.
dung sink: drain or pit where garbage, waste, etc, are deposited.
C 69-2 Dumsink refers particularly to a hole dug in the ground near the house. Into this hole is thrown all the garbage such as potato scraps, left-over food, etc. The water from the kitchen sink also flows into this hole. Every now and again mud was thrown into the hole because this keeps it from smelling too much. In the spring the dumsink was dug out and all the garbage put on the gardens for manure. C 71-37 Dunksink [i.e. dung sink], a drain usually just outside the back door where slop water is thrown, (also things like tea leaves, pot liquor, etc).
