drop v Cp OED ~ v 13 b to drop anchor. To lower a small anchor or
'graple' with buoy attached as signal that a particular fishing area is occupied for the
season. 1981 SPARKES 188 When a man went to fish on a certain
ground, he 'threw away' his grapnel, that is, he anchored. He is then said to be
'dropped' there, and when a man had dropped, it was extremely bad manners for somebody
else to come and drop near him.
