1985 Terminology of
Loggers 6 Dog beater: an old-fashioned stick for measuring lumber. Dog ears: pointed
projections left on a stump by someone who was unable to change hands while cutting down
a tree, and so changed sides instead, leaving opposite notches on the stumps.
