twelve hospitals in the Island, of which six are in St John's, are generally
well-equipped and managed, but in view of the distances which patients have to travel
there is room in many parts of the coast for the establishment of small hospitals of the

hospitals were...in operation at Old Perlican, Argentia, Come-by-Chance, Grand Bank,

hospital [is] the only cottage hospital...built without government assistance. It was
built by the American government...in appreciation [of the rescue of] American sailors
who went down with their ships the U.S.S. Truxton and the U.S.S. Pollux
during a naval disaster in 1942. 1987 FIZZARD 143 Around the early 1920s we find the
first examples of smaller houses [in Grand Bank] with four sided roofs. In some
instances the four sides met in a point to form a pyramid; in others, the four sides met
in a ridge to create what is known as a 'cottage' roof.
