The People Speak Role Cards
Pro-Confederate Side
Your name for this activity is ISOBEL MACDONALD. You support Confederation.
You WANT Newfoundland to become Canada's tenth province. These are the
arguments you use:
Confederation is my choice for Newfoundland. We'd be foolish not to choose Canada.
Here's what we will gain:
Family allowances. A cheque comes in the mail every month providing money
for every Newfoundland child under 16. Money for food and clothing for our children.
Our children won't need to worry about not having decent winter coats and
boots ever again. Canadian government money will help see us through the thin times.
Old age pensions. My father Howard is 67 years old. Under our
Newfoundland system, he won't be able to get any pension till he's 75.
And then he can expect only a meagre sum. The Canadians pay a lot more and
payments start when you're 65.
Veterans' pensions. So many hundreds of our Newfoundland people fought
against Hitler in the war. Canada will provide the money for their pensions
and look after wounded and disabled war veterans.
We'd be wrong and short-sighted not to support Confederation. We'll
all be better off.
