7000 B.C.- present First Peoples inhabit Newfoundland and Labrador
1000 A.D. Vikings explore, establish temporary settlements
1497 John Cabot voyages through Newfoundland waters
1583 Sir Humphrey Gilbert claims Newfoundland for England
1600 Earliest European settlements are established
1855 Newfoundland becomes a British colony with responsible government
1869 Plan for Confederation is defeated - Newfoundland voters turn down Canada
1895 Movement to join Canada fails - no Confederation yet
1933 Newfoundland government is bankrupt, asks Britain to deal with situation
1934 British Government appoints Commission of Government to run Newfoundland's affairs; responsible government ends
1939-1945 World War II provides many jobs, many ties with Canada and the United States, much prosperity for Newfoundlanders
1946-1948 British Government encourages Newfoundlanders to decide their country's future: responsible government, Commission of Government, or Confederation with Canada
1947 Newfoundland committees travel to England and Canada to gather information to make decision
1948 Referendum campaign takes place:
First vote: June 3
Second vote: July 22
Newfoundlanders choose Confederation
1949 Newfoundland becomes Canada's tenth province
