Guest Book Entries January - December 2004
I have a recording of the ferryland sealer folk song and was curious "where was Ferryland", your site was spot on for the answer. thanks
site itself most informative
I am a collector of old bottles. I have dug/unearthed them all on our little island, where families of long ago used to dwell in different coves and gardens. I have a large collection and i may be interested in selling them if anyone is interested. I can provide info & photos if needed. Very interesting site you have here.well done boys! Name: Kirk Oxford Place: Little Bay Islands, NL Canada - Thursday, December 16, 2004 at 23:40:19 (NST) Remote Host: - Remote IP Address: 142.163.1.5 Very much enjoy seeing this website as I am a descendant of Anne Calvert - daughter of: George Calvert, First Lord Baltimore Thank you, Randal M. Bundy rmbundy@hotmail.com http://bloodroyal.tripod.com/Index.html Name: Randal MacNiall Bundy Place: Covington, Ky USA - Monday, December 13, 2004 at 02:01:07 (NST) Remote Host: - Remote IP Address: 216.68.38.148 It nice to see how my state and your provence are connected. On the reverse of the Great Seal of Maryland consists of the escutcheon bearing the Clavert and Crossland arms quartered. Above is an earl's coronet and a full faced helmet. The escutcheon is supported on one side by a farmer and the other a fisherman. It symbolized Lord Baltimore's two estates: Maryland , and Avalon in Newfoundland. The Calvert motto on the scroll is "Fatti maschii parole femine." which is usually translated "Manly deeds, womanly words." The latin legend on the border is the last verse of Psalms 5 from the Vulgate. It translates, "With favor wilt thou compass us as with a shield." The date, 1632, refers to the year the Maryland charter was granted by Charles I, to Cecilus Calvert, second Lord Baltimore. The obverse of the Seal shows Lord Baltimore as a knight in full armor mounted on a charger. The inscription translated is "Cecilus, Absolute Lord of Maryland and Avalon, Baron of Baltimore. I thought you would find this interesting. I would like to visit Newfoundland someday, hopefully in the near future. Name: Tom Shepke Place: Federalsburg, MD U. The day we were there they were uncovering a fireplace and were installing cobblestones in what I believe was a living room area. I would like to revisit the site again. We found Newfoundland very interesting. We understand that the people working on the site are mostly volunteers, and we praise them for their dedication to a worthwhile project. Many thanks for an interesting tour of your site. Are there any others from the shipwrecks that could be shown? The one thing I thought it lacked was an overall photograph showing exactly where Avalon/Ferryland was in the Maritime Provinces region. I'm sure many of the inhabitants of eastern Canada know that already, but the rest of us are kinda clueless about such particulars. I am currently completeing an independant study unity for my archaeology class and for it i choose to study the Colony of Avalon. I was required to do an historical analysis of the site, an archaeologists's overview, then complete a mock proposal to excavate using the Historic Resources and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. Your site was a great help in discussing possible experts an archaeologist would need, and concluding reasons for the dig and a summation of the sites' history. So Thanks again!
