It nice to see how my state and your provence are connected. On the reverse of the Great Seal of Maryland consists of the escutcheon bearing the Clavert and Crossland arms quartered. Above is an earl's coronet and a full faced helmet. The escutcheon is supported on one side by a farmer and the other a fisherman. It symbolized Lord Baltimore's two estates: Maryland , and Avalon in Newfoundland. The Calvert motto on the scroll is "Fatti maschii parole femine." which is usually translated "Manly deeds, womanly words." The latin legend on the border is the last verse of Psalms 5 from the Vulgate. It translates, "With favor wilt thou compass us as with a shield." The date, 1632, refers to the year the Maryland charter was granted by Charles I, to Cecilus Calvert, second Lord Baltimore. The obverse of the Seal shows Lord Baltimore as a knight in full armor mounted on a charger. The inscription translated is "Cecilus, Absolute Lord of Maryland and Avalon, Baron of Baltimore. I thought you would find this interesting. I would like to visit Newfoundland someday, hopefully in the near future.

We had the pleasure of visiting Ferryland in September 2004 and found the site very interesting. The day we were there they were uncovering a fireplace and were installing cobblestones in what I believe was a living room area. I would like to revisit the site again. We found Newfoundland very interesting. We understand that the people working on the site are mostly volunteers, and we praise them for their dedication to a worthwhile project. Many thanks for an interesting tour of your site.

I thought the whole site was great, especially the artifact photographs. Are there any others from the shipwrecks that could be shown? The one thing I thought it lacked was an overall photograph showing exactly where Avalon/Ferryland was in the Maritime Provinces region. I'm sure many of the inhabitants of eastern Canada know that already, but the rest of us are kinda clueless about such particulars.

This site is awesome!! Thank you so much!! I am currently completeing an independant study unity for my archaeology class and for it i choose to study the Colony of Avalon. I was required to do an historical analysis of the site, an archaeologists's overview, then complete a mock proposal to excavate using the Historic Resources and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. Your site was a great help in discussing possible experts an archaeologist would need, and concluding reasons for the dig and a summation of the sites' history. So Thanks again!

Researching Ferryland for any info on Edward Keefe of early 1800's. I've found on the internet the map of the land and document granted to him. Any further information about the Keefe's (O'Keefe's) uncovered would be most appreciated. Saw the documentary on Discovery channel June 3, 2004. Is it possible to get a copy of that or any similar film for the O'Keefe family? This is such a treasure. Many thanks! GB

Thanks for this website, a great place for NL genealogy and to revisit a place where I worked for a few weeks during the summer of 1965. I was delighted to find the records of my RUSSELL ancestors. May I make a couple of suggestions? #1. Please include the surnames list link in the index following the Introduction. #2. Please include a brief note about the surname references which are recorded in the 1794 Diary of Aaron THOMAS. This is a great site for those interested in the history of my birthplace, New fin land. Cheers, Lloyd

Oops, guess I zigged when I should have zagged and submitted too soon. I wanted to add that I travelled to NFLD in 1995 and had a wonderful time exploring! St. Johns is a facinating ancient city. I couldn't get enough of it! As I was exploring Cape Spear, I happened to look behind me and surprised an arctic fox in his summer fur! On Gross Morne, I was stalked by a curious young moose. And the birds!!! I want to visit again. I still correspond with wonderful people I met there. It's late and I should be doing other things, but I'll be back to this site again. Thank you.
