I am a bottle collector, and recently came across some fragments, and one stem with the markings from a LEWELYN EVANS pipe in a tobacco field, after a fresh spring plowing, and then discovered some as far as 5 feet in depth, i wanted to thank you for the info...and am interested in more for research purposes. This area is in southern MD. on northern section of Calvert County, it could be the original settlement site for the plantation as portions of brick suggested that there was an structure,on the field, where i started digging, found in the pit were glass fragments, one black glass bottle base. Any suggestions are welcome as your site has been the most interesting source for "diggin" into some answers... Tony//

I am a pipe collecter/researcher for Gottfied Aust Master pipemaker from Winston Salem North Carolina. I also have in my collection pipes from the USA though I do have pipes from abroad. Most of my collection is 18th and 19th century. It was very interesting to see 17th marks from a very different part of the world. I do not own any pipes from the Northwestern part of Canada. The entire visit to Avalon was most interesting. Thanks for sharing with other collectors and archaeologists.

I was trilled to be able to take the walking tour and I can't wait to return home again this summer and see the progress in person. I found the web site informative, and will incorporate the pipe data in my archaeological research on smoking pipes (both Native American and European/Canadian/American) found across eastern North America, dating between A.D. 1500-1850. The "unusual tobacco pipe" illustrated among the Avalon artifacts that was similar to one found on the HMS Sapphire was identified as West African, whereas my memory is that the specimen from the ship was identified as a Turkish style. Does Dr. Tuck have a reference or reason for the difference in attributions? I have accumulated data from over 700 sites but few from Newfoundland, and I would like to add more from eastern Canada besides well published excavations as at Louisbourg, NS. My contact address can be found in the Registry of Professional Archaeologists.

Enjoyed your site and especially reading the old document transcripts. I am very curious about the surname spelling of Richard Russell in the 1647 documents recording the sale of the "Hopewell" and the "Judith". How could I see a microfilm copy of these two documents. Are you aware of any other records of ships built by the Russell's in Charlstown, Mass. for the Newfoundland Trade. Any reply would be appreciated. Sincerely Lloyd Rowsell p.s. in 1965, for a few months, I managed a sub-branch for Scotiabank in Ferryland and I saw the digs there during a visit in 1966.

I think you've done a great job cataloging and photographing the great selection of clay pipe marks from your digs at Avalon.I have collected a decent assortment of pipes - some marked, most not- from French and British sites over the past year. I ran across your web site through a chat line re.metal detecting. My aim is to photograph and record the collection I have amassed. Looking forward to seeing more material in the upcoming months.

Im a Ph D. from Salamanca, Paris and Caracas Universities and professor in Hispanic American Ancient Trade in Caracas. Actually finishing a thesis on Cacao Initial Trade from Caracas to Veracruz 1615-1670. My work has drive me to an ancient "hacienda" in the Caracas coast named Chuao. She was on the first in export cacao from 1615 in the central part of the country. I´ve find a respectable collection of dutch cly pipes rests and Im searching his data by some ways with specialist. I gess it was part of the intense contraband with the dutchs of Curazao island near Venezuela. I founded these near and round a 1665 (definely dated) stone & brick ruins that was part of the defensive anti pirats system of the hacienda. Im fascinated with this. The stamps would say the real city (I think the fabric was in Gouda, Neatherlands) and year date of his making. I need this to properly finish my thesis. Who can say me, and how? Please, my interest is only and strictly professional. Im not interested in purchase. No ofense.
