I want to thank you for this website. I am currently involved in researching the concept of "labeling" of potables prior to 1600. I have had many people tell me that this was never done prior to this time period. However, I am under the belief that this kind of wax labeling and a branding of kegs with a house seal or makers mark had to take place prior to 1600. I am currently looking for any sources to either prove or disprove this theory. If you have the time and could possibly point me in the direction of any such references, I would be extremely appreciative. This is a research project for a group called the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) who studies medieval time periods of 600-1600 AD. Thank you in advance for any help you may provide and have already provided. www.sca.org www.threeriver.org

This site made me very homesick! My mother was born in Aquaforte and I have relatives in that area. It is wonderful to see that Newfoundland is being discovered again. I spent many happy hours in that area as a child and took my children there when they were young.

I am researching my family history. My father (Walter Gabriel) mother was ElizaJane Youden from Brigus married to Frederick Gabriel. ElizaJane Youden's family lived in Brigus and Emaline and later settled in Lark Harbour where she married Frederick Gabriel. He was a school teacher and layman of the Anglican Church in Lark Harbour and I am trying to find any information I can about their families. Your web site has been very interesting. Thank you.

My husband and I have just returned from a great holiday in Newfoundland and Labrador. We toured the Avalon area and nearly every part of you beautiful island. The day we were in the Avalon area was when the Festival was on at Ferryland. We enjoyed it very very much. We stopped at a grocery and gift shop in Aquafort. The lady had beautiful gifts and much of her gifts were displayed on the second floor. I was wondering if anyone could send the the phone number or her name and address. I saw a picture in her shop and I really wish I had purchased it. A bad mistake to not buy something when you see it. I'm sure we will be back to your great island again. Your wild flowers are out of this world. Now back home everything is so dried up because of the lack of rain.

Just returned from Newfoundland July 13th. I was doing family research. Even looking through your website, I feel a little tug of the hearstrings. Both me and my husband will never forget Newfoundland and more specifically St. John's. I am still working on my family research (Walsh and Buckley), and am a member of the N.L.G.S. as well as a subscriber to the DOWNHOMER. Would love to go back again. I felt a very strong affinity to St. John's.

I just found your site, and it's very inter- esting. I hope someone can help me with the following: I dug up a meersham (sp)clay pipe bowl while preparing my garden in my back yard a few years ago. The bowl has a circular fragment missing, but clearly has a "D" on the side. I also located about 1" of stem at the same time. It says "Scotland" on one side and the number 325 and a partial name "McDouga.." on the other. Is there any way to I.D. the age of this artifact? My town is just north of Boston, Massachusetts and was settled in 1649. Thank you.

Thank you so much for coming up with the picture of my ancestor, which I saw for the first time. The Kirke's were always careless and modest about their adventures -"Faire sans Dire"- was above the family fireplace. My own small contribution was to pioneer bungy jumping and you will find the Dangerous Sports Club via Google Search engine. Lewis stood by the first Charles on the scaffold, but that's another story. All the best and a bientot. David.
