I recently acquired a clay pipe that had belonged to my Irish grandmother from the 1800's. So, I found this site very interesting, but did not have the mark that I am looking for which is an "L"? at the base of the bowl facing the smoker. Will keep looking.

It was just beautiful...We have told everyone about it since we arrived back, going to pass on this site for others to enjoy. Can't wait to get back again.

Great Site!! Looking for lost relatives. Anyone have any info on James & William Merrigan found in the 1871 directory for Renews, district of Ferryland. Also there is a voters list for Feryland 1849-1859 with a James Morgan Listed. Wondering if this is the same person. If you have any info on these people, please E-mail me. Thank-you.

Hi, I accidently came across this site while searching for something about my husband's direct ancestor, who was named Captain Thomas Yonge, Explorer for King Charles I. (1634) He's in the History books and was the one who actually gave the Charles River it's name. Anyway, I did end up reading alot of what's on this site, and enjoyed it very much! It was all very interesting. Tammy

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the site. It was so interesting to me, I would love to be involved in this type of work. It was amazing to see the detail work that was available in those early days. I also enjoyed the tour of the "house" behind the gift shop, the recreation was incredible, I believe it was Andrea O'Brien? who was the guide dressed in period costume, I have her picture. My only regret was I didnt have enough time. I was lucky enough to get a "hands on" tour of the room where the items were cataloged and stored. Next time I am "home" I plan to spend more time there. A special thanks to Lil, Darlene, Mercedes for their insightful information. Keep up the great work!!! Regards, Pat Kelly - Cape Broyle (missing the rock!)

Do we need this type person working in such a sensitive spot in the tourist industry ? The time of this incident was approximately 3.30 p.m I made explanations to the tourists.

I just came back from vacation in Nfld where I just spent a month visiting family, and relatives, in ferryland and conception bay, I could hardly wait to visit the dig everyone had been talking about, I was so amazed at all the findings, seeing the excavation sites was wonderful watching history unfold, another page to my heritage opening up before my eyes. its hard to describe the feelings inside, you have to be there to realize it best, seeing it on computer just isn't the same

The level of professionalism and quality of the Colony of Avalon never ceases to amaze me. I am so proud to be a resident of such a hitorically significant place as Ferryland and I am tremendously proud of the level of quality that the Colony of Avalon uses to promote itself. Your gift shop and display gardens are of the highest quality and the archaeological grounds are kept in such great shape (aesthetically). Today is the first day that I have had to opportunity to spend much time viewing your website and again, I am overwhelmed at it's quality and attention to detail. I commend the webmaster/developer, the provincial Dept. of Heritage, site archaeologists Jim Tuck and Cathy Mathias, Colony of Avalon staff, especially Lil Hawkins, and the Colony of Avalon Board of Directors. You have not only produced a top quality information site, you have helped re-build our area and have given residents of Ferryland a renewed sense of pride concerning it's historical significance. Keep up the fantastic work. Guy Barnable (P.S. I happened to notice that the Barnable family name was not included in the "names of Ferryland" section of this site. We arrived in mid 1800's)

We've been here at least since .....

Visited yesterday. Extraordinary. Especially fascinated by beautiful Westerwald (sp?) pottery with amazing blue and other glazes. I wished that I knew more about it and would have loved to be able to buy postcards - especially of the one displayed in the corner cabinet. It has hearts in a greyish glaze and lots of fine texturing, plus of course the lovely blue glaze in bands etc. Great use of my tax dollars. We ate a picnic in the Gentlemans garden - out of the wind! Thanks joan Scott

Your site's a great find for me. I just recently began volunteering with an arch group based in Annapolis, MD. You know well of course Maryland is a 'sister' province to Avalon, the lords Baltimore, etc. The digs, the lab, have been great fun while I meet the serious arch folks who have taught me much. I was stunned(sort of) when your site came up as I was searching pottery to better understand what I've handling at the site and scrubbing at the lab. Not surprising I suppose, after all to see some of the exact same materials at your site. But I'm still in the 'ooh' and 'ahhh' phase of a novice and have gotten a big kick from 'my' discovery. Great site, keep up the good work. thanks

My great grandparents, Edward Kelly and Anastasia Keefe came from Ferryland to Boston, MA USA in the 1860s or 1870s. Originally, their families were supposedly from Wexford, Ireland. Are there still Kellys or Keefes living there? It looks like a beautiful place. I was stationed in Argentia, Newfoundland from 1965-1966, but I didn't realize then that my relatives had lived so close. Hope to return someday soon.

Having worked on the archeological dig at the original Arlington mansion house on the Eastern Shore of Virginia where I live, I am thrilled to see the quality of the excavation and artifacts of the Ferryland site. How exciting! This is a great web site that gives a wonderful perspective of the project to those of us who can not visit in person. Thanks.

In my retirment from GE Aerospace, I've done archeology at Fort William Henry, NY, and led a dig for parian ware here in Bennington, VT during 1998. We were trying to determine the product of a pottery, which operated 1843-58. They didn't issue any product lists and collections of their wares at the local museum are unmarked. I wrote my own book on the subject of IA in Vermont a few years ago, title "200 Years of Soot and Sweat: The History and Archeology of Vermont's Iron, and Lime Industries" (that's about the whole book, isn't it?) Got any questions regarding slag or charcoal? I've always wanted to visit L'anse au Meadow, somewhere north of you guys. Maybe some day. Happy digging. Vic

I was surfing the net under my family surname and was surprised to find what must be a relative listed on one of the fishing ships from 1698. Thank for this wonderful site. i've enjoyed getting to know your country. I will be visiting the wesleyville and flowers island area this july. my mother, Lillian Pearl Kean was born in the bonnevista bay area in 1923 to Jacob and Jane (sturge) kean. she was the oldest of 3. her brothers' names were douglas and solomon. i hope to meet cousins i've never met and to hear my mothers voice in the wind. she passed away june 5, 1999, 19 1/2 years after my father, leander joseph korte died. he met this beauty in st johns nfld while on a construction crew building the airport just before WWII. they married and he spirited her off to the states. she only had the opportunity to return to her home three times. Once in the late 50's, and twice in the 70s. she talked lovingly of her home land, and had wished to return there a final time before her death. so, 3 sisters and i look forward to an experience of a lifetime. See you in july, 2000.

Hi, I'm researching "John Guy", as part of my family tree and have a copy of a "last will and testimony, recording him as having been the "founder of Newfoundland". My interest lies in finding anything I can about him, marriage status, children etc from around that period. Family here-say always held that he had a native American wife, but we have been unable to confirm one way or the other if that was true. If you are able to throw any light on any aspect of my research, I'd really appreciate it. Many thanks for your help, great site, wish I could visit! Rob Ashton, from down under.

While home visiting relatives in Ferryland this past summer I had my first chance to see the dig open as I usually come home during the off season. My favorite part of it was seeing the actual dig going on by the workers. I really enjoyed checking out the artifacts that were on display in the museum also. Usually you don't get to see that many original items when you visit historical places down here in the states, so I was really fascinated by that part too. I am hoping to make it back there within the next couple of years to see your progress with the site!
