Sid Butt
From Sid Butt: He Is What He Is by Peter Gard, Bravo vol. 1 no. 8, November 1992. Sid Butt was born in Carbonear, Newfoundland, in 1953. Early art involvement included building stage props for school and making pictures with leftover house paint.
In 1974 Butt received a bachelor degree of fine arts and education from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. He returned to Newfoundland and worked as a community artist-in-residence at Memorial University Extension Service from 1978-79.
Thanks to a two-year commission from Newfoundland businessman, Craig Dobbin, in 1989-91 Butt was able to concentrate full time on his art. He bought and transformed the old Carbonear Salvation Citadel into a painting and clay studio. Butt's realist paintings represent Newfoundland landscape as well as situations that are familiar in everyday life. In addition to being part of the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador's Permanent Collection, his work has been collected by a variety of public institutions including The Canada Council Art Bank, Fisheries Products International and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
