C 71-18 Young babies were always dressed in long clothes which they
wore until the age of six weeks. Then a ceremony called 'stumping the baby' took place
... the two long petticoats and the extra-long nightgown or dress that was wound around
the baby were replaced by two short petticoats and a short dress and knitted woollen
socks.
