Mar, p. 6 In the battle they cut three of our straps and cut the skins of several seals
which were on the last strap hoisted aboard of us. 1984 WRIGHT 83 [He took] the straps
off the pelts, while [we] worked in the hold loading pelts onto the straps to be hauled
out with the winch.
5 Length of stout rope fastened to the
stern of a 'dory' and used to launch and recover the craft; DORY STRAP.
1984 KELLAND 14 The stern straps were fashioned from stout manila
rope, the two ends being pushed through holes in the top section of the dory's stern and
secured on the outside by the forming of knots, leaving a loop or becket approximately
sixteen inches long hanging down on the inside. On Banks fishing vessels they were used
to hoist dories outboard and inboard.
