staneen n Cp DINNEEN stanna 'vat, barrel.' A makeshift keg for fresh water.
1937 DEVINE 49 ~ A water keg, made from a piece of a log. A section, with a stout limb near the end, was scooped out by chisel, and the inside surface hardened and dried over a fire and then scraped clean. The limb was then made into a spout by burning a hole through its length with a red hot wire or stocking needle. A cross section of the same log, bounded with a split withe, made the cover. The staneen was carried full of fresh water every day in boat at the fishery in the early days when cooper's kegs were scarce and dear.
