Telegram 24 Dec, p. 29 '[Christmas] really started the end of August when we picked
the whorts for squatum,' says he. 'Squatum,' sez I, 'what's that?' 'Oh shucks,' sez the
skipper, 'whort wine or what you now call blueberry wine. It was called that because the
woman had to squat up the berries with a potato masher,' sez he. T 222-66 Before going to
bed they would want some refreshment, and a nice drink of squattum would be in order.
That is a drink made of partridge berries. You would need lots of sugar in it because it
would be bitter as the varge. Q 67-49 ~ blueberry wine. P 81-70 He was going to see his
brother to get a bit of squatum. This meant he was going to get some partridge berry
drink. He did not know what else was added but he did not think it was without a bit of
liquor.
