1880 Standard [London] 20 May, p. 3 Four or five species are pursued off the shores of Newfoundland and in the Arctic Regions proper, viz:—the 'ground' or 'grown' seal, the saddle-back, or harp seal, so called from the saddle or harp-shaped mark on the back of the males, the blubber-nose, and the floe rat—which is the smallest species found in the North Atlantic, and much more rarely the spotted seal, or 'kassigiak' of the Eskimo.
