snub1 n also snubby. Cp OED ~ sb3 1 'a snub nose.' A cod-fish with a rounded, blunt snout, believed to be a sign of good luck; SEAL-HEAD COD. Cp TALLY1 n: ~ FISH.
C 66-3 A snubby is a cod-fish with an abnormal snout, longer than normal and slightly upturned. The fishermen consider catching one of these in their trap as a sign of a good season. They treat it as a sort of amulet by cutting off the head and hanging it on the fishing stage door and it is not to be taken down. C 69-23 Whenever you have a snub (a fish with a deformed head, cod-fish) in your trap, you will hear the old fishermen say that you will have luck, and that you can expect a few large catches of cod-fish. C 75-141 Old fishermen will hang the head of a snub up in the stage. It was a sign of a [good] load of fish, and it would turn the direction of the wind.
